HOPE SAKUMA: LAST PADDY PLANTED

Mo Bangura

Hope Sakuma farmers are diligently engaged in the essential task of planting more paddies, having meticulously prepared the land by brushing and turning the soil to ensure optimal conditions for growth. The fields, still promisingly moist from the recent rains, are now in a prime state for planting as the worst of the rainy season gradually recedes. This transition period is crucial, as it allows the farmers to harness the benefits of the moisture while also preparing for the upcoming dry spells that can follow.

The old seed bed, now much depleted, prompting the boys, known for their expertise and dedication, to take great care in choosing these newly sprouted rice seedlings. Each seedling is selected with precision, ensuring that only the healthiest and most robust plants make it into the paddies.

Once the seedlings are chosen, the planting process begins in earnest. The farmers work in unison, starting at one end and planting the seedlings in neat, organized rows that not only maximize space but also facilitate easier maintenance and harvesting later on. Their teamwork is a testament to their commitment to the land and to one another, as the small team share the labor and the joy of working together in this vital agricultural endeavor.

In between paddy planting sessions, the boys take a moment to celebrate their hard work and achievements. They pause to capture the spirit of the day with a few snapshots, smiling and posing amidst the lush green landscape they have cultivated. These photos serve as a reminder of their dedication and the community spirit that binds them together, celebrating not only the fruits of their labor but also the camaraderie that flourishes in the fields of Hope Sakuma. Each click of the camera encapsulates the essence of their ongoing journey in agriculture, a journey filled with hope, resilience, and the promise of a bountiful harvest ahead.
