EXCITING FIELD TRIP: LEARNING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

Updated: Jun 7

The students at Abierich Academy were buzzing with excitement as they embarked on their first official field trip, a highly anticipated adventure that took them to the Environmental Foundation for Africa's Biodiversity and Renewable Energy Centre. This trip promises not only fun but also a wealth of knowledge about the environment, making it an ideal educational experience for the young learners.

Upon arrival, the facilitator, Katherine Kabangai, greeted the enthusiastic group with a warm welcome and a round table discussion to kick start the day. Her passion for environmental education was evident as she outlined the day's agenda, which was packed with engaging activities designed to immerse the children in various aspects of environmental science. The students could hardly contain their enthusiasm, eager to dive into a day filled with hands-on learning and exploration.

One of the highlights of the day was the interactive session led by Isata Dakowa, who introduced the students to the vital concepts of soil health, manure, and compost making. The children eagerly rolled up their sleeves and got their hands stuck into the manure as they learned about the essential role that healthy soil plays in sustaining plant life and, by extension, the entire ecosystem.

Isata explained the process of composting, emphasizing how organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich soil, which not only benefits gardens but also contributes to a healthier environment. The kids were fascinated to see the different components that make up compost and were thrilled to participate in the hands-on activity of mixing various organic materials.

In another engaging session, the technical director, Mrs. Warritay, took the children on an enlightening journey into the world of trees. Elaborating on the crucial role that trees play in maintaining biodiversity and supporting renewable energy initiatives, the kids enjoyed making pouches to grow saplings from seed.

Through interactive discussions and activities, the kids learned how trees help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and providing oxygen, as well as serving as habitats for countless species of wildlife. Mrs. Warritay encouraged the students to think critically about their relationship with nature and the importance of protecting our forests for future generations. Throughout the day, the children participated in various active learning activities that reinforced the lessons they were learning.

The kids left the Environmental Foundation for Africa's Biodiversity and Renewable Energy Centre not only with a deeper understanding of environmental issues but also with a newfound appreciation for the natural world around them. Their excitement was palpable as they shared stories and insights from the day, already looking forward to their next adventure in learning. This field trip was not just an educational outing; it was a memorable experience that instilled a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment in the hearts of the young students at Abierich Academy.
