SIERRA LEONE SUMMER SCHOOL: GIRLS WIN HANDS-DOWN

Updated: Sep 2

ree

The third week of Hopes Standards High summer school reached a sporting conclusion, marked by a thrilling soccer match where the girls' team took on the boys' team and emerged victorious! This friendly yet competitive event not only showcased the athletic skills of the students but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among all participants. The girls displayed remarkable determination and strategic play, ultimately securing their win and leaving a lasting impression on both their peers and the faculty.

Throughout the week, students engaged in a well-structured schedule that included morning classes tailored specifically for nursery and primary students. These sessions were designed to nurture foundational skills and ignite a passion for learning at an early age. The curriculum was filled with interactive activities, creative projects, and hands-on learning experiences that kept the young learners excited and motivated.

In the afternoons, a different group of dedicated instructors focused their efforts on preparing primary 6 and Junior Secondary School (JSS) students for the upcoming National Primary School Examinations (NPSE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). These critical assessments play a significant role in the students' academic journeys, and the summer school program provided targeted support through comprehensive review sessions that covered past examination papers.

As the week progressed, enthusiasm grew among the students in anticipation of their own summer school exams scheduled for the following week. The educators at Hopes Standards High have worked diligently to ensure that each student feels prepared and confident. They have provided personalized feedback, additional resources, and plenty of encouragement to help students grasp the material thoroughly. The primary goal of the summer school program is to keep local children engaged with their education during the long summer holidays. By creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment, the program not only combats summer learning loss but also instills a sense of responsibility and discipline in the students. The sense of achievement felt after the soccer match, combined with the academic progress made throughout the week, has undoubtedly contributed to a positive and enriching summer school experience for all involved.

The summer school, now in its third year, continues to be a vital resource for the community, reinforcing the importance of education while providing a safe and engaging space for children during the summer months.
