AZOLLA MULCHING VEGETABLES

Chief Mohammed Lamin wades in to harvest the first pans of Azolla from our rice paddies to mulch Hope Sakuma's newly planted vegetable seedlings,

The boys are carefully covering just the puddle for now to keep seedlings' roots cool and moist and when the rice in all the paddies is harvested, more Azolla can mulch the whole bed to supress weeds and retain more moisture as dry season comes. Now, for farmer field school and for our next seasons IVS all we need is some ducks...

We're going to show, here on our demonstration farm, Azolla’s myriad benefits and applications working in practice demonstraing how Azolla can not only help intensify crop production sustainably to improve food security and nutrition in Sanda Magbolontor by drawing on proven projects from IVS landscapes around the world but also how Azolla can help these forest communities diversify livelihoods to build sustainable communities and stop rampant deforestation in the chiefdom.
