After our fine harvest of nutritious okra and melon the Makelekos All-Star ladies are learning how to plant a seed bed of red onions in nursery beds prepared and replenished with a little sand, mulched Azolla and chicken dung.
Then, as the sun passes over the new beds, the Ladies water in the seed - it looks like the Ladies are ready to demonstrate their techniques to other farmers at Hope Sakuma's farmer field school.
Just ten days later and Hope Sakumas' first onions are sprouting green shoots poking through the rich Sanda soil and doing well!
Onions are so expensive in Sierra Leone at around £30 a bag and these red onions will help boost nutrition locally with vitamin C, B6 and B9, calcium, iron and potassium.
Hope Sakuma's farmer field school starts soon and will see new vegetable beds developed integrated with rice paddies, ducks and fish - with Azolla fertilizer pits providing all the nutrients our veg need to grow - a low-cost, high-nutrition, high-profit model to benefit subsistence farmers in the most disadvantaged Chiefdom in Sierra Leone.
