A PIECE OF THE PLANTAIN

Over in Bo, volunteer Mohammed has located some fine plantain saplings and an experienced arboriculturist keen to visit Hope Sakuma to learn about Azolla's potential as a bio-fertilizer and train our farmers in plantain care.

Long-time readers will recall Njala student, Mohammed, who helped locate Azolla in Sierra Leone with student colleagues and visted Hope Sakuma last summer to see Azolla in acttion fertilizing our rice.

On hearing Bo plantain - the sweetest in the land reknowned for its flesh and flavour - is coming to Sanda Magbolontor, in a great example of inter-tribe collaboration, our dedicated farmers set too clearing some land for 150 saplings arriving from Bo next month if inter-district travel is permitted.

Plantains are so nutritious, rich in potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and C helping boost local nutrition, they also dry, preserving well for rainy season and waste stalks and skin will make an excellent contribution to Hope Sakuma's bio-fertilizer.
