WEEK THREE: BACK IN THE THICKET OF IT

March 3, 2020

Brandishing their new cutlasses fashioned by our artisan Kamasorie blacksmiths the gentlemen return for this weeks’ farmer field school learning to clear and brush land to a standard sufficient for construction of IVS bunds, rice paddy plots and their adjacent Azolla and Bocashi fertilizer pits.

But first, project coordinator Amarbest walks the land cutting a trail with the farmers and explaining how Hope Sakuma farmers work with the landscape and leave forested areas to thrive so they can shelter and protect our wildlife and key pollinators for our farmers’ crops.

Over the coming weeks the team will also learn boli land preparation, incorporating the use of Azolla as rice fertilizer, as well as land preparation for an innovative nature based system to boost maize yield sustainably developed by Salvation Farming Solutions we’re very excited about and hoping to trial and which promises to improve nutrition, livelihoods and climate adaptation.
