A scenic sojourn upline with Madam Baromy, Manays Chairlady and Sheku visiting Hope Sakuma's cassava and cashew nut farm the project boosting nutrition and climate change adaptation in Sanda Magbolontor chiefdom, Karene district.
It's dry now but weeded and ready, when the first rains come, to be interplanted with nutritious millet and potato leaf to feed hungry farmers and their families - 70% of our farmers are women - and also helping suppress weeds, avoiding the need for pesticides, maintaining our soil's health.
By diversifying into drought-resistant cassava and cashew our farming communities will have highly nutritious alternatives to Salone staples, rice and groundnut, in times of climate stress helping these communities become more resilient as they take practical steps to adapt to climate change.
The next steps are for our Honey FBO's to weave some more hives and train our farmers to place the hives to pollinate the cashew as they mature, further improving nutrition locally and boost livelihoods by producing more honey.
When this farm matures 2020-21 these communities livelihoods will improve by adding value locally by processing cashew into flour and oil and cassava into foo-foo, gari and flour.
