DAY 3: SIERRA LEONE MUDSLIDE - 235 CHILDEN IN URGENT NEED OF WATER, FOOD, CLOTHES

Reporting from the epicentre of the mudslide tragedy, Alfred Sima, Concern 4 the Deprived Welfare Association (CoDWelA) and his team of voluntary social workers told us of their progress:

“We countered 235 needy children in 89 families at Regent Community Hall and School where some families are temporarily housed while awaiting placement. We have the names of the household heads on excel.

In terms of care for the kids there is no direct care apart from surviving parents and relatives who are themselves terribly affected with no means to provide food. We are there temporarily to help but badly equipped to do so for long hours.

We could not write down names of children or take any detail information from them as they were full of tears and could not narrate their ordeals from the nightmares.

What's urgently needed at the moment is food, clothing, blankets, bedding and medicines.

Thanks to donations totalling $280 received last night/today we're able to tak more rice and water and some fish tomorrow.

To donate for food: http://bit.ly/SierraLeoneMudslide

All donations will be published, recorded and accounted for and you’ll see your donation being delivered on twitter and facebook.

CLOTHING, BEDDING, BLANKETS, FOOD NEEDED With our colleagues Society 4 Climate Change Communication we’re arranging some collection points in Freetown to collect donations. Please share with your networks and any friends in Freetown or it’s environs who have bedding, clothes, blankets to spare - get in touch and we hope to have a contact no up and running and more details tommorow.

We believe a co-ordinated local ground level response and a cordinated disapora response are essential to deliver for these 235 children and all survivors and the many more yet to be registered and we stand ready to come together with colleagues in the sector to agree and support a settled approach.
